Metchosin Roots

Metchosin, with its expansive landscapes, serene countryside, and flourishing farmlands, has deep roots. They date back to the Coast Salish peoples who were its first inhabitants. The first peoples were known as Smets-shosin in the Native Coast Salish language.

Metchosin attained official incorporation in 1984.

At the heart of Metchosin lies the Village Centre, nestled at the junction of Happy Valley Road and Metchosin Road. Here, a handful of stores, a quaint restaurant, and a school converge, forming the vibrant nucleus of the community.

Rural Real Estate

In the 1860s, this region was unlocked for agricultural purposes to supply fresh produce to the growing population of gold miners and settlers in the neighboring Victoria area. As a result, the surroundings exude a pastoral charm. Although marshlands are not prevalent, numerous migratory birds, such as sandpipers, turnstones, and surfbirds, frequent various parks across Metchosin, including Witty’s Lagoon Regional Park. These avian visitors diligently scour the cobble beach, making the most of its resources.

At Witty’s Lagoon Regional Park, a lengthy expanse of sandy shoreline gracefully curves along the Strait of Juan de Fuca.  It shields a vital marshland from the relentless forces of waves and wind. Here, you can seek refuge behind a sturdy driftwood log and escape the persistent breeze, which even in the summertime retains a refreshing crispness. Marvel at the panoramic vista extending across the strait to the majestic peaks of Washington’s Olympic Mountains.

The shallow waters of the beach invite leisurely swims, particularly pleasant as the tide washes over sun-warmed rocks. Multiple park entrances offer access, with the most direct route from Victoria being via Highway 14.

Galloing Goose Trail

his charming multi-use trail, once a bustling railway line, winds its way through diverse landscapes, spanning urban, rural, and wilderness vistas on its 55-kilometre journey from Victoria to Sooke. Whether you prefer cycling, leisurely strolling, jogging, or even horseback riding through the countryside, this trail offers endless opportunities for exploration and enjoyment. Whether you’re commuting to work, unwinding on a weekend afternoon, or embarking on an adventurous trek from Sidney to Sooke, the trail beckons as your personal sanctuary to cherish and preserve.

Originally constructed as a freight railway line during the First World War, the Galloping Goose Trail now forms a crucial part of The Trans Canada Trail, a national network of multi-use trails connecting coast to coast to coast. Fondly known as “The Goose,” this trail intersects with the scenic Lochside Regional Trail, a 29-kilometre former railway route stretching from Saanich to Sidney. Additionally, it converges with the E&N Rail Trail – Humpback Connector, a newly developed 17-kilometre pathway primarily situated within the E&N rail corridor. Upon completion, this connector will seamlessly link Victoria with the Western communities, further enriching the region’s network of cycling and pedestrian pathways.
